Improve Your Mood With a Morning Routine For Your Mind and Body

Mindset, Work-Life Balance

We are all busy and mornings can be hectic. What you do in the morning can set the tone for your mood for the rest of the day. Start it right with rituals that make you feel powerful and alive. Consider these habits for a morning routine to help you thrive and conquer anything that is thrown at you.

For Your Mind

  • Resist the urge to lose yourself in social media. Set aside a time slot later in the day to unwind and catch up on your feed. When just starting your day, check for urgent emails or text messages only.
  • Starting on tasks the night before can make your mornings more pleasant. Get anything prepared for the next day that you can so nothing is missed or forgotten and will save you time.
  • Allow 5 minutes to meditate or pray. Cultivate gratitude, count your blessings, and start to journal. Nourishing your spirituality will do wonders to boost your mood.
  • Give yourself loving and motivational messages or affirmations. Do this while brushing your teeth and looking in the mirror to help you focus.
  • Connect with loved ones. Enjoy a few minutes of family time during breakfast to chat about plans and goals for the day.
  • Do you struggle to find time for yourself? The early hours may be an opportunity to engage in your personal passions. Wake up early to continue learning. You could use your mornings to complete your degree online or study more informally. Listen to your favorite podcasts or indulge in a chapter of a book you’re reading.
  • Listening to music reduces anxiety and enhances mental alertness and memory. Put together a playlist or turn on your favorite radio station while making a cup of your go-to beverage.
  • Plan your day. Set goals and block out your time. Otherwise, external events can keep you from focusing on your true priorities. Remember to leave yourself adequate downtime for refreshing breaks.

For Your Body

  • Do you feel groggy even after 8 hours of sleep? Skip the snooze button. It interrupts your body’s natural waking process which can cause sleep inertia that lasts for hours.
  • You may want to postpone your first cup of caffeine. Drinking water will rehydrate your organs… our brains are 73% water, so drinking a glass can help you feel more alert. If you need some flavor. you can add a few berries, herbs, or cucumber slices to infuse overnight.
  • You need to refuel, so EAT. If time allows, enjoy cooking a traditional breakfast meal or grab a quick, nutritious option like greek yogurt with fresh fruit or an egg and cheese burrito.
  • Squeeze in 20 minutes or so to exercise. Research has shown that activity produces endorphins that have a positive impact on your mood, memory, energy levels, and sense of well-being.
  • Natural morning light wakes up your body and starts a hormone cycle that prepares you for a restful sleep at night. Open your curtains first thing or get a few moments of fresh air on your patio.

Kick off your day with a morning routine that will make you feel more productive and fulfilled. Adopt positive habits and jump out of bed with a smile!
